Butane
With butane there is instant high heat output. You do not need to do any priming and there is no spilling. However the heat output of butane is lower than that of white gas. The cost of butane is expensive and you need to dispose of the canister. Butane also does not perform so well in cold weather with your portable gas stove.
Propane.
Propane works a lot better in the cold weather than that of butane and also propane can be supplied in larger containers which are refillable. However there is a limited availability of propane. It is expensive and you have the same problem of having to dispose of the canister.

White gas.
White gas has a very high heat output and is very easy to find in the US and Canada. If any of the fuel is spilled it evaporates very quickly. Priming is required with white gas and if you do spill any of it you must be careful as the spilled fuel is highly flammable.
Coleman Portable Gas Stove Fuels
Powermax Fuel
This exclusive high performance butane and propane blend to Coleman extends the operational range of back packing and camping appliances. Extreme cold or high altitude are not a problem in the slightest for this fuel. It has consistent output even when the canister is low due to a liquid withdraw system. Every powermax cartridge is resealable which allows you to detach the cartridge, store it and then use it again at a later time. None of the fuel is wasted and all the canisters are recyclable.
Coleman Fuel
This is also called white gas or camping fuel. Ideal for camping and even actually burns in freezing conditions. Just as output falters with butane and propane in cold temperatures, this fuel output stays constant. This Coleman fuel is very clean and refined and burns hotter than other liquid fuels. It’s not expensive and is easily available. The fuel is carried in small refillable fuel bottles. Perfect for the portable gas stove.
Kerosene.
This too has a high heat output and is easily found and readily available internationally. It does however at times produce a sooty smoke and you have to prime it with alcohol.
Alcohol.
It is very quiet and clean burning. Is readily available almost anywhere. The main problem with alcohol is it’s lower heat output and hence a longer cooking time is required with your portable gas stove.
Unleaded car gasoline.
This fuel is not expensive and can be found worldwide. It is however dirty and very sooty and its high volatility makes it a health threat.
