Choosing A Portable Gas Stove

When you go camping one of the most important pieces of camping equipment that you will need is that of the camping cooker or portable gas stove. Invented first in the 19th century the modern day variety comes in a huge range of sizes, models and designs. So endless is the choice that before buying one it is perhaps best to take a few minutes out time and think about what you want the portable gas stove for, the conditions it will be used in and of course how many people it will be serving. It is also a good thing to go for a stove from a reputable designer and manufacturer as if you take good care of your stove there is no reason for it not to give you a lifetime of use. So basically it is a one off purchase and you want to make the right choice.

Today camp stoves come in all sorts of shapes and sizes designed for backpacking or larger models that will stand in a semi permanent camp kitchen. They consist of burners and grills and the options you have these combinations in is entirely up to you. But anyway the more you look for a camping stove the more you will realize that there are so many options open to you.

So once you have decided on the size of the cooker then you must think about the fuel that you will use to run the cooker. Propane and butane are the most popular fuels of today but you should really take a little time and check out cookers that run on white gas. This white gas is a gas developed by Coleman the American company that specializes in designing and manufacturing camping equipment. White gas is both cheaper and more efficient than either propane or butane. That does not mean however that it is not good to buy either a propane or butane gas stove. The choice is yours but if you will be using the camping stove a lot then the white gas option has to be looked into.

Maintaining The Portable Gas Stove

The size of the portable gas stove will probably be the first decision you make. If you are a lone backpacker then it will be a very simple and small stove you will choose as you will be only cooking for yourself and you must also take into consideration that you will be carrying the stove on your travels and hikes. So compact is good for storage and lightness is great for not putting strain on your body whilst transporting it. However if you are a family camper and will be cooking for more than one then of course you will need a larger stove with a minimum of two burners and perhaps a grill as well. These of course are larger and more heavier but if you go as a family camping then of course you will be taking much more gear as well so you will probably be transporting everything in some type of vehicle so the size and weight of the stove is not such a major issue.

Once you have purchased your portable gas stove there is no reason for the unit to give you many years of use or even a lifetimes use if you take proper care of the unit. Once you have bought the stove always read the manufacturers instruction manual so you know how to use the unit properly and of course take in all the safety issues. The stove has to be assembled correctly to function properly and efficiently.

It’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with the stove so test drive it at home before venturing out on a trip. Set the unit up in your garden and cook a meal on it. If all goes well then you know that you will be ok on the camping trip. For each trip it is a good idea to go with new and fresh fuel. When new the stove is clog free but after use this may not be the case. Old fuel can break down and cause impurities that could clog up your stove and the other problem you may have from old fuel is that the fuel may have become contaminated.

Also when refilling your fuel canister use a fuel funnel with filter as this will ensure that any water or debris will not enter the system and give you the risk of clogging. Another little tip to adhere to is when you open or close your fuel canister do it in such a way that no obstructions enter the system. Just simple precautions such as these will prevent you ever having any clogging problems in the future with your portable gas stove.

After every use it is also a very good idea to clean your portable gas stove properly. To do this wipe it clean with warm water and dishwashing soap and then after that dry it properly. Not only does that give you a nice clean cooker to use next time but the cleaning will also ensure there is no build up in the burners that could cause you problems in the future. If cleaned after every use the stove will remain fuel efficient, corrosion free as well as rust free.

And finally always store your portable gas stove properly. When not in use keep them in their padded sacks that they are usually supplied with. The less damp the storage place the better for the whole unit as well. Always store the cooker and fuel separately. Most of it is just common sense. But if you spend money on an item then why not take care of it to give you longer and better use as well as your money’s worth. If you take care of your portable gas stove then your portable gas stove will take care of you.
