From the first invented portable gas stove in the 19th century, today we have a huge
variety of models and designs to choose from for a vast array of activities and situations.
You can break down the portable gas stove in to several broad categories depending
of course on the stove design and the type of fuel that the portable gas stoves uses.
These broad cater dories are: bottled gas stoves, gravity fed spirit stoves, stoves
that use a volatile liquid fuel in a pressurized burner and un-
Alexis Soyer invented the first real portable gas stove in 1849 called the Magic Stove. It was based on a very similar principle as the kerosene lamp with a wick submerged in a fuel tank or reservoir and drawing the fuel up to the burner. In 1892 F. W. Lindqvist invented the first portable pressurized burner stove that used kerosene for it’s fuel and was based upon the design of that of a blow torch. This pressurized burner was more suitable for use in extreme conditions and high altitude. The pressurized burner is still widely used today because of it’s fuel efficiency and high heat output.
Portable gas stove also use other fuels such as alcohol or propane. As early as 1919 it was reported that single burner alcohol stoves were used for camping. On sailing boats alcohol based stoves were used instead of kerosene stoves because of the safety implications. But nowadays these have been replaced by portable gas stoves that use compressed gas such as liquefied petroleum gas, butane gas or propane gas in refillable or disposable canisters.
Beginning in the 1950’s and 1960’s in Europe and USA respectively was the increased awareness of the effect that campers and backpackers had the environment. This led to the vast widespread use of the portable gas stove. Camper’s used to cook food on an open fire using any available materials such as fallen branches to fuel the fire. However the fire scar left behind on the ground would stay there for 2 or 3 years before any new plant growth. These fire scars looked not nice and ruined areas. The portable gas stove is a solution to this.
The design of most portable gas stove is that very much like to many pressurized burner stoves. The difference being that the fuel tank or cartridge contains a liquefied gas such as butane gas, propane gas or a mixture of hydrocarbons that are held under pressure. The gas in the cartridge is in liquid form when stored under pressure in the cartridge, however upon leaving the cartridge it will vaporize immediately and arrives at the burner as a gas. The main advantage of the portable gas stove is that of convenience and ease of use. You do not have to prime the portable gas stove. They are generally maintenance free and produce an immediate high output of heat. The actual flame is so easy to adjust and to be honest they are just so plain and easy to operate.
The portable gas stove for camping comes in 2 basic designs. The burner assembly is fitted snugly into the top of the gas cartridge, which thus serves as the fuel supply and also as the portable gas stove base. The other design is that of the stove is free standing and the fuel cartridge is separate from the burner but connected to the burner with a small hose or pipe. Single burner propane gas stoves that are used for food service come with the gas container integrated into the body of the stove.
As camping stoves, gas cartridges can be expensive to use and the majority of them are not refillable. But that’s the price you pay for convenience and ease of use. There is also the question of environmental grounds but if the canisters are disposed of properly this helps with those issues. One rather awkward problem though is that there is very little or no compatibility between rival manufacturers and systems and because of this it is very difficult or nearly impossible to get gas cartridges for some older models of portable gas stove.
A good quality portable gas stove will make your cooking outside an easy and pleasant experience. They are a great piece of equipment for camping with because they are clean, safe to use and very easy to operate. As with most items of camping equipment, the portable gas stove has many different models and makes on the market today available to the consumer.
There are compact designs of the portable gas stove such as the Coleman One Burner Sporter which has a simple design of a single burner which you connect directly to a standard gas canister giving you about 12 hours of cooking time. Then moving up a level you have more advanced cookers that have 2 hot spots for cooking and even a grill. These too are a version of the portable gas stove and depending upon the make and style, they can be attached to a gas cylinder or have the gas canister slid into a housing that is part of the stove.
But whichever portable gas stove you are interested in, make sure you do your homework first before buying. Decide on what camping conditions you will be using the cooker in, for how many people you will need to cook for and finally the type of fuel you wish to use. Do take everything into consideration because if you choose wisely and take proper care of your portable gas stove, it will be the only one that you ever buy. With proper care it will last you a lifetime.
